Saw Madonna
I saw Madonna on the corner yesterday
Where she was standing with little Jesus in her arms
She was whispering sweet nothings to miscellaneous passers-by
So I assumed that she was trying to sell her charms
So I dug down into the pockets
Of my coat of many colors
For a token of esteem to throw her way
When I suddenly was startled by the snarling of the beast
I had to turn and fight to keep the hounds at bay
I took cover
In the dusky light of reason
I hid my fears of the turning seasons
And I lit a candle at the alter of ideas
Still burning today
You tasted the apple
Got snakebit and hassled
And you fell from the sky
No virgin’s emergin’
To tell you “Son, the whole thing’s a lie!”
