On The Riverbank

I watched the sun go down tonight

The breeze came through the trees

I heard the sparrows chatter in the brush

As the daylight slipped into the night, my heart felt ill at ease

As all the world came softly to a hush

I miss you like a mother and a child

Like a captive creature longing for the wild

But I know that I will find you in the shining stars above,

And I hope that you’ll think kindly of our love

The nights are so long with my troublesome heart

Shadows dance on the wall

My arms still ache for the absence of you

But do you think of me at all?

I took my heart to the riverbank to wash my pain away

My bedroll lain beneath the summer sky

I listen the wisdom of the crickets and the trees

Just a fire, my little dog and I

I miss you like a mother and a child

Like a captive creature longing for the wild

But I know that I will find you in the shining stars above,

And I hope that you’ll think kindly of our love
