Why Headphones?

Two reasons:

First, recording quality. The use of relatively low-end condenser mics in the recording process causes the need to boost recording levels,  causing ‘clipping’ (distortion), and reducing signal response. This leaves the sound of vocal recording especially ‘washed out’ when played back on small speakers – a thin and reedy quality that is not true to the actual harmonic response of the original sound. Headphones tend to restore this, by removing the airspace that adds to the deadening effect of hearing the recording through open speakers. Even cheap headphones typically have better frequency responses than many speaker systems. At the least, larger speakers with better frequency response will be better than smaller ones, which I ask you to completely avoid. To make a comparison by first hearing through phones, and then through speakers will reveal the dramatic fact of this principle. It’s like hearing two completely different recordings!

Second, the nuances of mixing and synthesis, provides for the effect of sound movement within the stereo field, which is not heard as clearly, nor which has the dramatic effect of the sound moving though space, on open speaker systems. There are very subtle effects of wind, rolling thunder, and nuances of highs and lows in the instrument voicings that will go completely unheard on open speakers. You’ll miss A LOT!!

I guarantee that you'll find a world of difference in your enjoyment of
this recording by using even inexpensive phones, and encourage you to plug in your walkman!

Thanks,

              Steve
